WHO WE ARE
On Tuesday, November 7, 1922, Heinrich Putsch registered his business as a commercial representative in Nuremberg. The founder primarily traded in cellulose acetate, a plant-based plastic. A century later, his grandson Peter Putsch and the team at Exipnos GmbH have returned to these roots. For the past five years, this subsidiary of Putsch GmbH has also been researching and producing modern bio-based and biodegradable plastics in Merseburg (Saxony-Anhalt) .

On November 7, 1922, Heinrich Putsch registered his business as a commercial representative in Nuremberg. One of the company’s primary products was cellulose acetate, a plant-based plastic.
The roots of sustainable plastics were already present from the very beginning.
After the Second World War, Christian Putsch, son of Heinrich Putsch, developed the company into a successful trading house.
The company supplied plastics to manufacturers in the eyewear, toy, and household appliance industries, establishing strong expertise and relationships within the plastics sector.
In the 1980s, Putsch GmbH began developing its own formulations for customers.
The company also expanded its expertise beyond materials, helping customers to optimize machinery and equipment for plastics processing.
Material development and processing expertise became increasingly connected.
In the 1990s, Putsch GmbH commissioned its first in-house production line for customized compounds at its premises in Nuremberg-Boxdorf.
The high-quality compounds manufactured there enabled the company to expand throughout Germany and beyond, with “made by Putsch” compounds eventually finding their way into vehicles produced by German automobile manufacturers.
In 2009, Peter Putsch, representing the third generation of the family business, consolidated the company’s research and development activities within EXIPNOS GmbH, founded specifically for this purpose.
The new company created a dedicated platform for materials research, technology development, and future-oriented plastics solutions.
EXIPNOS established its operations in Merseburg, Saxony-Anhalt, within the Central German Chemical Triangle, taking advantage of the region’s strong innovation network.
During the following years, EXIPNOS developed innovative solutions such as PP-mid, plastics with integrated conductive tracks, and DCIM direct compounding technology. At the same time, the company expanded its research into plant-based and biodegradable plastics, reconnecting its modern material development with the plant-based plastics at the roots of the family business.
A new generation of plastics began to emerge — combining technical performance with renewable resources and natural cycles.
Since 2021, EXIPNOS has coordinated RUBIO, one of Europe's major collaborative research projects in the field of bioplastics.
With an investment volume of around €17 million, the project focuses on developing bio-based polybutylene succinate (PBS) and advancing the use of renewable raw materials in plastics.
Today, EXIPNOS combines more than 100 years of family history and plastics expertise with modern materials research and technology development.
From the cellulose acetate traded by Heinrich Putsch in 1922 to today's bio-based, biodegradable and innovative plastics, the journey has come full circle.
A century of experience is now driving the next generation of materials.
We are Exipnos GmbH: a family-run, medium-sized company with over 100 years of experience in the plastics industry. For us, tradition and innovation are two sides of the same coin.
