BioCelain Competence Center

We can bring biopolymers into real-world applications.

WHAT IS BCC

From Biopolymer Development to Real Applications

The *BioCelain Competence Center – BCC* is a practical development and processing platform for bioplastics and bioelastomers at EXIPNOS.

Its objective is to bridge the gap between material development and real industrial applications.

New biobased materials are not only developed and characterised in the laboratory. Within the BCC, they can also be compounded, processed into real products, tested and further optimised for their intended application.

The BCC therefore brings together material science, processing technology and product development within one integrated environment.

As the competence centre is currently being established, its technological capabilities will expand continuously over the course of the project.

Our Approach

Develop. Process. Apply. Recycle. Digitalize.

The BCC follows an integrated development approach.

Develop

We develop biobased materials and material formulations with application-specific properties and performance.

Process

The materials are transferred from laboratory and pilot scale into scalable plastics processing technologies.

Apply

Real products, components and demonstrators are manufactured in order to evaluate the material directly in its intended application.

Recycle

Recyclability, recycled material loops and circular material concepts are considered as part of the development process.

Digitalize

Process data, material data and development results are collected and structured in order to create knowledge for future applications.

Technologies

Building a Broad Processing Platform

The BCC is being equipped step by step with a broad range of processing technologies for the development and application of biobased materials

Material Development

Developing Materials for Real Processing Conditions

Material development is at the core of the BioCelain Competence Center.

A particular focus is placed on biobased polymers, including polyester-based materials such as PBS.

New formulations are developed according to the requirements of the intended processing technology and final application.

The objective is not only to achieve suitable laboratory properties, but to create materials that can be processed reliably and used in real products.

The BCC therefore connects material formulation directly with processing trials and application development.
